The Open Road

First things first: if you are expecting a blog about hitchhiking all over the country, then turn back now. The hitchhiking I'm talking about is more of the figurative type. Sorry.

Now that we have that out of the way, maybe I should explain why I chose the name for this blog. I was reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, and was taken back by the story. For those of you who haven't read the book (or watched the movie), the book follows the true story of a young man named Christopher McCandless as he goes on a cross country trip to find himself. While the story itself is one that we have all heard before, what makes this one different is not necessarily the end of the story, but rather the telling.

Christopher's story is not told by himself, unfortunately, as it does not have a very happy ending for him. His story is instead told by the people whom he met on his extraordinary journey. It is this group of people that allow us to see who Christopher was and it is in their accounts of their time with him that we know how deeply he affected the lives of complete strangers.

I feel that our own personal story could be viewed in the same way. We hitchhike through our lives, encountering people along our travels that have a profound effect on us and we on them. Sometimes those people will drive you just to the next exit, or sometimes you meet that right person and decide to stick around for the long drive ahead.

You may even add a passenger or two along the way.

In the end all that matters is that you're happy with where your seat is and who's there with you. We all know where our journey eventually leads us, so it only makes sense to have some fun, play the license plate game, take some pictures, and sing along to our favorite songs on the way. The best thing to do is enjoy the ride and share some stories with as many of your favorite people as you can.
